The following is part of a memoir that I wrote for the SAWG Annual Writing Contest. I won third place with this piece.
I froze and didn't breath as the bear walked next to our tent. With my eyes bugging out I watched the bears shadow on the thin wall of canvas, that separated me from it. He stopped, sniffed, then lumbered by, rubbing the tent rope while I trembled.
When the bear was past the tent, I let out my breath and in a tight whisper called, “Daddy.”
